Mike Amiri has set a precedent as one of the premier rock star luxury brands in the fashion industry with their signature Italian stretch denim, top-tier quality, and overall LA-grunge aesthetic. Last season Amiri presented their first ever runway presentation, which took cues from the 1980's cult classic "The Lost Boys," which offered more classic skinny cuts with vampire esque styling. However, this season brought other LA influences outside of the classic rock n' roll motifs that brand has taken pride in season after season. In a brief interview with Vogue, Amiri reflected on the evolution of his styling for his S/S 19 collection by stating, “It’s so much bigger than skinny jeans and rockers, even though that’s part of it (Vogue).” Throughout this collection, we were introduced to baggier cuts, flowy silk shirts, Laker inspired gear and a lot more hip-hop styled fits. For Amiri, I think it is important that the evolution continues to slightly change to offer more variety in fit, which previously was ultra skinny and slimming. Introducing baggier silhouettes that help tie in other LA subcultures such as the importance of sports teams, West Coast hip-hop, and of course, skate culture all into one will help the brand offer more variety for its cult-like following they have already created. This season brought out the most daring and varied offerings from the Amiri label, which was a nice refresher but also wasn't without flaw. I am excited to see the design growth and evolution happening within the brand and that they are willing to present other "close to home" subcultures through the clothing they create. Some of my favorite pieces within this collection include the silk shirts, the silk flowy trousers, the new low cut footwear options, and Laker varsity jackets.
