Runway: Amiri F/W 21
“In Paris we do runway, but in Hollywood, we make movies” echoed Mike Amiri’s Instagram caption just days prior to his F/W21 show. Opening with an aerial shot of Alton Mason wearing a sharply tailored black double-breasted blazer, the show quickly transitioned from Look 1 with the help of a musical collaboration with “The Roots.” Set on the famous 4th Street Bridge in Amiri’s “home court” of Los Angeles, models were artfully choreographed in a seamless transition which has been one of the stronger showmanship elements in Amiri’s arsenal and has been displayed in the brand's ongoing digital presentations.
Mike Amiri has made a name for himself over the years through his cult following built by his signature skinny denim and effortless LA styling. This F/W 21 however, the king of the skinny denim took to more relaxed silhouettes with a variety of wool and leather trousers. Featuring split hems and baggier cuts paired perfectly with the relaxed tailoring, cropped leather and varsity jackets, and grungy knitwear. Pressing the reset button and going back to the brand’s LA roots - F/W21 poses a new era of “The Amiri guy.” Mixing patterns with looser shapes and fabrics created a new and advanced silhouette for their existing and no doubt newly acquired customers. Amiri made clothes that a fashion guy wants to wear in a post-pandemic world. Sign me up for the double-breasted suit, split hem trousers, grungy knitwear, and the cropped snakeskin adorned leather jacket. By building onto the existing wardrobe and continuing to expand the Amiri universe have been the right way forward to separate themselves from the pack and it shows.
Over the past two years, Amiri & Co have been competing at the highest level with luxury brands around the world but their success despite the pandemic and his last two digital presentations really show that he is not playing catch up but is setting the bar for the entire industry. With a thriving & growing business, an Amiri Prize Award incentive, and the opening of flagship locations domestically this year marks a seismic change of the guard for the way the brand is viewed. The S/S21 & F/W21 are more than enough key indicators of that. Be sure to watch the full collection video and view the full collection below.
