Artist Exhibition: Mario Bellini
It may not come as much of a surprise when I say that mid-century modern design has become one of the most popular styles in terms of interiors. With this, we are seeing so many pieces from designers that have been at the forefront of this interior style for decades. One of those designers is Mario Bellini, and even if you’re not familiar with the name, I can guarantee that you’ve come across his work before. Bellini was born in 1935 in Milan, Italy and would later graduate from The Polytechnic University of Milan with a degree in Architecture in 1959. Today, over 60 years later, Bellini is recognized as one of the most renowned architects and designers worldwide. He has won the prestigious Golden Compass Award eight times, which acknowledges high-quality work in the field of design in Italy.
One of, if not, the most recognizable furniture pieces from him is the Camaleonda sofa. For me, this piece stands out for so many reasons. The design itself is an art piece, it’s the perfect balance of being abstract while also visually appealing.
A personal favorite furniture piece from Bellini is the torsion table. The design is simple in its complexity, which instantly catches your attention.
Throughout his career, Bellini has continuously produced designs that show a heightened level of technicality and skill while being truly one of a kind. If you live in New York or find yourself there, the MoMA has 25 of Bellini’s works in the permanent design section, which I recommend taking the time to check out.
