Brand Spotlight: Our Legacy
In the recent years of the ever growing and changing menswear zeitgeist, there have been a variety of brands who come and go. Some rise to popularity instantly while others have consistent slow builds season to season. One of the most consistent brands that have grown in popularity over the past few seasons definitely has to be Swedish-based brand, Our Legacy. Believe it or not, I was first introduced to Our Legacy through the guys over at Throwing Fits (shoutout Lawrence, James, and Chuck) in one of their podcast episodes. The way that they romanticized the brand and thirsted over new season drops was enough to send me flocking to the internet to discover what I was missing out on.
Our Legacy was founded in 2005 in Stockholm, Sweden by Jockum Hallin, Cristopher Nying and Richardos Klarén. Hallin and Nying started as graphic designers that set out to create "the perfect t-shirt." Following their success in that venture with local boutiques in Oslo, they began creating their expansive menswear line. In an interview with Vogue, the founders described the genesis of the brand as "We were thinking about our idea of classic menswear, but done for us, done for our time. The generic look at that point [mid-2000s] was very slim and rock and roll, very Dior Homme-esque. We wanted to romanticize the modern gentleman—button-down shirts, chinos. . . . Now that doesn’t raise an eyebrow, but back then, it was all black stretch jeans” (Vogue). With that in mind, Our Legacy was born.
Richardos, Jockum, and Cristopher are self-proclaimed “fabric nerds” which can easily be seen and felt with each garment they produce. They take a very experimental approach when crafting garments with intricate over-dying, washing, and hand-distressing techniques. May it be an opulently rumpled camp-collar shirt, a distressed blazer, or a puffer jacket in a tie-dyed silk fabrication, Our Legacy injects a sense of modernity into timeless silhouettes borrowed from the past. Each collection is rooted in personal experience with an apparent precision at redefining masculinity and adding sensitivity to their silhouettes; The juxtaposition of feeling dressed up but also casual. Each collection breathes a sense of warmth and familiarity while also tweaking the codes of menswear that many of us have grown up on.
Below is a look at Our Legacy’s Spring/Summer ‘20 collection titled “Joyous Reunion,” which is an exploration and celebration of social movements that have been gaining momentum around the world.
