Brand Spotlight: Le Labo

It’s no secret that Le Labo has become a staple fragrance & homeware destination for a large sector of New York City’s population. Outside of the countless memes and associations with their now signature “Santal 33”, you probably know or have at least heard of the cult fragrance-maker. Le Labo labs can be found in major metropolitan areas worldwide, where they craft each of their orders by hand. With deep connections to New York City & rich history of fine perfumery tradition from Grasse, France, Le Labo is nothing short of one of the finest fragrance brands in the world.

Brand History

Fabrice Penot and Edouard “Eddie” Roschi, former L’Oréal executives, launched Le Labo in February 2006 with merely ten fragrances and its now-famous sandalwood-scented candle, Santal 26. The first lab was stationed on Elizabeth St. in Nolita, NYC, where its technicians crafted their custom collection of unisex perfumes.

Penot and Roschi have ingrained the Wabi Sabi philosophy, centered around finding beauty in the art of imperfection. Each of the brand’s scents is made to invoke a sensorial experience for the wearer. The brand’s modern designed laboratories serve as a way of allowing passing city denizens to experience Le Labo’s assortments of perfumes, candles, and grooming products. The idea of compounding the perfumes in front of the customer came to Fabrice Penot when he studied in Grasse, France, the world's perfume capital. All of Le Labo’s products are composed of premium raw materials that awaken the olfactory senses.
